Time well spent: Tips for better sleep

While there are times in life when we need to get by on a less-than-ideal amount of sleep, for our health, mental clarity and overall wellness, getting enough sleep is essential.

And it’s not just the amount of time spent in bed that matters – that time has to yield the quality sleep we need without tossing, turning and counting those proverbial sheep.

“We spend close to a third of our lives in bed so it’s important that that time is well-spent. While a quality mattress plays a key role in that, we encourage our customers to consider the other elements that may be affecting their sleep, too,” says Love Dodd from Dodd’s Furniture and Mattress.

Does your pillow help align your spine, for example? Could a cooler temperature help you nod off sooner? Here’s a look at some of the many variables that could be affecting your sleep:

  1. Light: It’s important to create a space conducive to sleep, and that includes blocking daylight, street lights and other unwanted illumination – blackout curtains can be a life-saver in a bright environment! But it’s also important to try to avoid the blue light that comes from our phones or tablets at night. If you do use your screens, try switching to ‘night mode’ to decrease screen brightness.
  2. Pillows: There’s no one-size-fits-all when it comes to pillows, but by testing out a few options geared to your preferences and sleep style, you’ll be able to find a pillow that works for you. To help, Dodd’s carries a wide selection of performance pillows in three different heights that can help your head and spine stay in proper alignment.

  3. Temperature: A too-warm room can make a good night’s sleep hard to come by – typically, 15 to 20°C is ideal, but try experimenting to see what works for you.“Don’t forget to adjust your sheets and duvet for the seasons, and ensure your pillow, mattress and mattress protector offer good air flow,” Dodd suggests.
  4. Allergies: Whether you’re susceptible to year-round challenges of dust and pet dander, or seasonal allergens like pollen, allergies can make sleep difficult. An easy-to-clean mattress protector helps you prevent allergens from collecting on your mattress.

Another benefit of a mattress protector? It lets you enjoy Dodd’s exclusive 120-night Comfort Guarantee – that’s 120 risk-free sleeps to help ensure you’ve found the right mattress to ensure many good nights’ sleep!
