Church-turned-live-entertainment-hub fosters community spirit and cultural enrichment

After choosing the scenic Alberni Valley for retirement, Charlene Patterson envisioned creating a vibrant arts and entertainment centre. Her vision turned reality in 2010 when she opened Char’s Landing in the heart of Port Alberni’s Uptown Art District.

Her efforts have turned a century-old church into the premier live entertainment venue for the community, welcoming musicians, dancers, writers, and community organizations from near and far.

“The walls are covered in joy, lined with the works of local artists” Patterson shares. Her commitment to her vision has made Char’s Landing a home not just for performances but also for connection and shared experiences. Emphasizing the venue’s role as a community connector, where newcomers to town often find friendship and common ground among fellow attendees.

Char’s Landing is currently buzzing with excitement for the performance of renowned artist Christina Martin on April 6. This event highlights Patterson’s dedication to showcasing top-tier talent and is anticipated to remind the community of the irreplaceable value of live music. People can get tickets online here.

“World-class artists like Christina Martin choose to perform here because of the intimacy our venue offers,” Patterson adds.

The venue’s distinctive atmosphere is crafted carefully to foster an intimate setting where artists can share their stories and include the audience as a part of the event itself. With its cosy coffee house vibe, Char’s Landing invites guests to enjoy a drink, settle into a comfortable couch, and immerse themselves in the music. This setup ensures that everyone, from solo visitors to groups, feel at home and connected.

Beyond concerts, Char’s Landing also serves the community as a hostel, supporting green initiatives and offering space for personal celebrations and corporate events. Providing a stage not only for artists, but for the shared moments and memories of the community.

“Doing my best to keep live music alive is about more than just the shows,” Patterson says. “It’s about inviting people to come together, to experience joy, and to celebrate the community.”
